Cisco VSS Configuration Walkthrough | Catalyst 6500/4500

Cisco VSS configuration walkthrough

This post is based on my Cisco VSS (Virtual Switching System) configuration walkthrough for Catalyst 6500/4500.

VSS allows two physical chassis to operate as a single logical switch. In practice, that means simpler redundancy at the distribution/core layer and the ability to build multi-chassis port-channels (MEC) for downstream devices.

WHAT THE VIDEO COVERS

  • VSS prerequisites and design mindset (what to plan before you type commands)
  • The core configuration flow (domain, switch virtual, and VSL)
  • Validation and operational checks after forming the VSS pair
  • Common pitfalls: keeping the VSL resilient, understanding role behavior, and avoiding split-brain scenarios
